   nobility
Born in Brussels, Marie, duchess of Burgundy (1477-82) was only 20 when her father charles the bold, died, and King louis xi of France annexed Burgundy, invaded Picardy, Artois, and Boulonnais, and wanted to marry her to the dauphin. The Grand Revolt, which he encouraged, forced Marie to sign the Grand Privilège (1477). But Maximilian of Austria, whom she had married, defeated Louis XI at Guingegatte (1479), allowing him to keep Flanders.
